Thanks Adriel for the response, I appreciate it and put some new fresh perspective on the issue. I already finished that class but I still remember one thing that the prof. said in his defense. He elaborated on the idea that appreciation of poetry, when based on knowledge of poetry, has two lenses if you will. There's the rose colored lenses when you look at a poem with romantic knowledge and there is the other lense of what he calls classical knowledge. He said that most people look at poetry through romantic knowledge which consists of what sounds superficially "good" or euphonic as a whole whether it has a great catchy rhyme scheme and so on. this would be what mainstream would represent, whatever popular opinion deems "good poetry" is simply because romantic knowledge caters to that type of poetry and most people aren't poetry professors so most people just have that romantic knowledge. Then, he argued, that the next level of knowledge is classical knowledge which I'm sure you could guess what it implies. When one looks at poetry using classical knowledge such as what is seen in well, the classics (iambic pentameter, super complicated rhyme scheme, etc.) then one can truly appreciate "good poetry" in classical terms. Anyways, I though I'd throw that out to see how you guys could respond. I think he makes a good point and I also think you made a good point about if you put your heart into it. The thing about your point is that I find an issue with it in that well I don't believe that everyone who tries with all their heart and soul to write a good poem is going to produce a good poem. I don't mean to be cynical or anything but I think that perhaps not everyone that tries poetry is meant to write poetry, yknow what I mean? Just like everyone that sings in their car, with all their heart and soul like me, isn't meant to put out an album, like me, hehe. But anyways I thought that I would throw that out for yall. Hope to hear from you soon and God bless!

About

Description
In the age of empty words—where millions log in to comment on videos of iguanas skateboarding, where entire television series’ are based on who can blurt out the most grotesque diss on someone’s mother, where there exists such a thing as cell phones for babies, it seems everyone has something to say. But who’s really listening?

Enter iLL-Literacy—a collective of poets, emcees, and all-around fresh individuals—with a mission that seems simple enough: to have something to say, and for people not only listen, but want to listen.
Call it spoken word, call it hip-hop theater, but never call it typical, the crew consists of Adriel Luis, Dahlak Brathwaite, Nico Cary and Ruby Veridiano-Ching—four artists who harbor impressive accolades in their own rights. Since the four officially debuted their tour as a collective at the American University of Paris in 2005, iLL-Literacy has swept the corners of the globe with a delicious blend of lyrical verse, innovative theatrics, and an addictive approach to audience interaction that has kept the crew traveling nonstop.

iLL-Literacy has covered much ground in a short time, rocking stages from off-Broadway New York to London’s Picadilly, to its home base in the California Bay Area. News of the amazing talent has drawn attention from HBO’s Def Poetry and MTV, as well as crowds who have witnessed the collective share the stage with the likes of Common, Mos Def, KRS-One, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

iLL-Literacy’s hot, and only getting hotter. ‘Nuff said.
